An architect and urban planner who graduated in 2004 from Santa Úrsula University in Rio de Janeiro, he worked at the offices of prominent lighting designers, where he gained technical and conceptual knowledge and experience in lighting effects and their application in projects.
Since 2002, he has dedicated himself exclusively to artificial lighting design projects in the residential, commercial, and corporate sectors.
In 2005, Ugo Nitzsche was named one of Brazil’s rising talents in lighting by Lume Arquitetura, the country’s first magazine specializing in architectural lighting.
He received the award for Brazil’s best lighting project in 2006, 2009, and 2011 through the country’s only national biennial lighting design competition—the Abilux Award—in the residential, bars/restaurants, and energy-efficiency categories.
He was honored again in 2015, with four award-winning projects across different categories.
In 2016, he received the IAB National Award in the Buildings category for the CRAB Museum in Rio de Janeiro. In 2023, he received the CINASE Award in the residential category and another Abilux Award, marking his 10th time among Brazil’s top three. He also received the international LIT Lighting Design Awards.
He has delivered more than 200 lectures across several Brazilian states; taught Lighting Technology in the Architecture programs at Faculdade Silva e Souza and Santa Úrsula University from 2011 to 2015; and created the Lighting Design Training Program—the market’s most comprehensive online course, which helps professionals develop their skills and master lighting in their projects.
